One Step Closer by Linkin Park
“One Step Closer” is the debut single by the nu metal band Linkin Park released in 2001 and the second track of their debut album, Hybrid Theory. It is also the song that catapulted the band to stardom, especially towards the rock audience, as well as one of the band’s well-known songs. The song reached #79 on the Hot 100 on February 20, 2001. The original title for the song was “Plaster” (an earlier mix can be found circulating the internet labeled “Plaster”). The band says they created “One Step Closer” while struggling on “Runaway”, the sixth track from Hybrid Theory. The single was released in 2001, achieving notable success in Australia, but moderate success in the UK and U.S.The song features Mike Shinoda yelling the repeated lines along with Chester Bennington during the chorus. Shinoda’s lines are overdubbed with additional screams from Bennington in the studio recording, somewhat drowning out his vocals.Bennington has said that “One Step Closer” was initially one of his least favorite tracks on “Hybrid Theory” and disliked the fact he would have to play the song live for the remainder of his career. However, after witnessing fans’ reaction to the song, he eventually warmed up to the song. There is a remix of “One Step Closer” on LP’s remix album Reanimation (2002), titled “1Stp Klosr”, done by The Humble Brothers and Korn’s lead singer, Jonathan Davis. This remix was preceded by its “demo version” of the remix (included as an easter egg on Linkin Park’s DVD, Frat Party at the Pankake Festival) and a radio edit version of that demo. The song “X-Ecutioner Style” on “Reanimation” features elements from “One Step Closer” as well as “Forgotten” and “Cure for the Itch”. Furthermore, Collision Course (2004) features a mash-up of the original song with “Points of Authority” and Jay-Z’s “99 Problems”. “One Step Closer” is one of Linkin Park’s best known songs. Linkin Park is an American rock band from Agoura Hills, California. Since their formation in 1996, the band has sold more than 50 million albums and won two Grammy Awards. They achieved mainstream success with their debut album, Hybrid Theory, which was certified Diamond by the RIAA in 2005. Their following studio album, Meteora, continued the band’s success, topping the Billboard 200âs album charts in 2003, and was followed by extensive touring and charity work around the world.Recognized for their adaptation of the nu metal and rap rock genre into a radio-friendly yet densely-layered style in Hybrid Theory and Meteora, the band moved away from this and explored a variety of other genres in their latest studio album, Minutes to Midnight. The album topped the Billboard charts and had the third best debut week of any album that year. They are also known for their several collaborations, most notably with rapper Jay-Z in their mash-up album Collision Course, and many other artists on Reanimation.
